We talk about food a lot - after all, Greater Gotham’s sister blog Fabulous Foodie is all about food. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the culinary side of life gotham-style takes center stage here pretty often. But there are a few tips worth hanging on to and keeping front and center.
That’s what this page is for. An ever-evolving resource, culled from our ongoing epicurean blather.
Directories and Listings
- City Search: a local search basic no matter where you are or what you are looking for. The search for grub in Gotham is no exception. The City Search New York Restaurant section is a fine - if slightly generic and uninspiring - starting point
- Menu Pages: a compilation of every - or darned near every - menu in New York. A great way to find restaurants by cuisine or by neighborhood. Browsing brings places to your attention that you might have missed despite their being around the corner from you for years. And, if you’ve got time to kill or - like us - you find yourself spending way too much time thinking about these things, you can create the perfect fantasy menu by selecting single courses across a wide variety of places.
Best Ofs: But how do you find the best food? You could take a poll or survey - but that’s time consuming and people might hesitate to reveal their “special finds” to you. Luckily for us:
- New York Magazine has their Best of NY Food
- The Village Voice has Best NY Eats.
- You can also check out Time Out New York’s restaurant section
- Sites like Chowhound
Reviews and Critics
- Everyone’s a critic in Zagat.
- The New York Times - being all that’s fit to print - also covers the local food scene in their own wordy and increasingly fun way. I know they aren’t known for fun but they are loosening up a bit. I think they deserve credit for making a go of it. Not only is the Dining & Wine section comprehensive, with a fabulous, easily searchable archive - but their food and win blogs - Diner’s Journal and The Pour - are great reads.
- New York Magazine has their weekly guide to help you navigate the Gotham Grub scene. It’s full of reviews, the now standard food blog - in this case Grub Street - and the Best Of type lists that the mag seems so fond of.
