Gotham: The Steamy Summer Edition

It’s hot and humid and I don’t like it – and before anyone says, “But you were raised in Houston. It’s hotter there” (as someone always does), I’ll add that yes it is hotter and more humid in Houston for longer stretches of time. But no one walks to the grocery store in Houston. Rarely does anyone venture forth from the air-conditioning except for occasional yard work or a misguided tennis game. You could – and some do – spend weeks without emerging into the actual air. NYC? Harder to manage that little feat.

Walking. Walking for groceries. Walking to the bank. Walking to the corner because cabs are easier to get there. But having gotten a cab, — cabs without air-conditioning. Cabs with air-conditioning that the driver has not turned on (for reasons of his own which are myriad and demented). Cabs with something they call air conditioning but which is as effective as having someone sit next to you and pant on you. Which by the way might sound good to some (and even to me on occasion if it wasn’t so hot out. Feeling frisky? Catch me in Autumn). New York City – Summer in 360 degrees. Heat saturated cement on all sides so that you can feel the rising temps come at you from all angles.

Bleah.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be indoors.
