We need you and you, you and you - yes, you too and you in the back with the hat.

Or at least, that’s what mini-mayor told us - and everyone else - when he launched  New York’s first multi-nation advertising campaign.

To be perfectly honest I’m not so sure we need to worry about getting the word out. It’s out. It’s been out for ages and rarely as out as it is these days. I mean, wander down to the Village and almost every other person on the street is here from the UK and Europe taking advantage of the great bargains resulting from the strength of the pound and euro to the dollar. I may have been the only New Yorker on the Intrepid last time I was there. Hell, I may have been the only American.

Which is fine with me, by the way. I am not one of those New Yorkers that grumbles about tourists out of habit. Oh sure - I’ll grumble if they stroll down the middle of the sidewalk in a drifting, aimless sort of manner but not because they are tourists. Because they are In. The. Way. If someone from Brooklyn was walking that way, I’d grumble at them too. Or check to see if they were feeling OK because I’ve never seen anyone from Brooklyn walk that way.  Brooklynites are very much like cats. They always appear to know where they are going and move with purpose. The fact that they may not, in fact, have the slightest idea where they are or where they need to get is masked by cunning bravado.

The thing I do think might be good about this campaign - entitled “This Is New York City” - is that they said it was supposed to make the point that New York is much more than just Manhattan. I hope there’s more material coming that actually will address that point because you could note tell from the promotional video. It was mostly Manhattan with just enough of the Bronx to get a Yankees shot in there.
